A Quick Look Into The Peculiar World And Unpleasant Obsessions Of Scrupulosity

Religious OCD, usually called 'scrupulosity', is characterized by immoral and repetitious thoughts relating to religious symbols such as God, prophets, saints and angels. The obsessive thoughts could be uniquely associated with individual's religious beliefs and the culture that the person is living in. Some of the well-known thoughts accompanying scrupulosity are uncontrollable desires to swear to God or having erotic fantasies with God or other religious beings. Even though they are aware that these thoughts are not true, these folks have difficulties handling them.

The signs and symptoms of religious OCD can begin at age 10-15 and typically influences their lifestyle and relationships with others. These people are inclined to think or imagine things that are inappropriate or against God, and feel that they might commit a sin from having those thoughts. Scrupulosity is observed more in religious people, nevertheless being religious is not the cause that sets off this disorder. People can have these types of unwanted and invasive thoughts when they are praying or performing their usual routines. Below are some examples of the typical thoughts accompanying scrupulosity:

- Picturing that he or she is also having sex with God or other holy beings when love making with his/her lover

- Swearing to God, prophets, saints, etc.

- Contemplating inappropriate things about holy places such as church, mosques, temples, etc.

- Picturing they are urinating on a holy book

As a consequence of these morbid thoughts, victims usually withdraw themselves from society. They are convinced that if other people find out about his/her improper thoughts, they are going to be blamed or condemned. As their family and friends have no idea what scrupulosity is, they usually ridicule them. As a result of all these negative feedbacks, these individuals usually try to lessen their guilt with cleaning, washing and bathing compulsively. They also have a tendency to think they deserve eternal damnation as a punishment for having these thoughts.

Even though handling scrupulosity is tough, it can be eliminated with psychotherapy, medicine and self-help. These days many people still have no idea about what scrupulosity is and how it is to live with religious OCD.

Having scrupulosity brings about many problems in an individual's life. The very first thing that these people must know is the fact that scrupulosity is a manageable and treatable disorder. The obsessive thoughts are not their fault, and they will not be punished by God. They ought to know that being a sinner and suffering from religious OCD are very different things. The positive thing is, some of these individuals realize that these thoughts are not true but is unable to handle their guilt towards God. With psychotherapy sessions, they can gain insight and create alternative thoughts to overcome scrupulosity.
