Finding The Extraordinary Banff Hot Baths: A Pioneering History Of Banff Famous Hot Baths
Within the the fall of 1883, several Canadian Pacific Railway construction staff stumbled across a cave containing hot springs. The cave was situated on the eastern side of Alberta's Rocky Mountains in what is currently known as Banff Alberta.
From the discovery of these hot baths was conceived Banff National Park, Canada's first national park and the world's third. Spanning 6,641 square kilometers (2,564 square miles) of lakes, scenic mountains, glaciers, woodlands, grassy lands and rivers, Banff National Park is one of the world's distinguished travel places.
The Banff Hot Springs are located in a tranquil location south of midtown of Banff.
Prior to the 1880s, Canada's native people were the original people to use Banff's hot mineral springs. For the natives, these were cherished waters. The natives used the waters as a place to cure illness and maintain health.
In 1884, the first foreigners visited the hot springs and by 1886, the beginning of construction of an initial log bath house was underway. This bath house came to be later called the Grand View Hotel. The first tourists arrived by train but it wasn't until 1915 that a road was made and the first vehicle owners showed up at the hot springs.
By the 1930s, The Canadian federal government acquired the lease for Banff's hot spring property and set out constructing and mending the hot mineral springs and bath house.
In 1932, the hot springs bath house opened up and it was inclusive of sulphur water swimming pool, plunge baths, steam rooms, tubs, bathrooms and dressing rooms. The bath house and pool were built in a design that would compete with the popular spas of Europe.
By 1961, it was necessary to repair and refurbish the pool and the interior areas of the bath house, as they were used.
Yet again, in 1995, the Banff Hot Springs were restored and this time the building was renewed to its 1932 design. The refurbished bath house opened up in August 1996 with a new health spa, diner, gift and coffee shop.
Banff's hot springs is one of the finest spas in the Canadian Rockies and is a must-enjoy for travelers heading to Banff National Park.
